At Glow Orthodontics, we design custom retainers that help maintain the results of your orthodontic journey, ensuring a lasting and confident smile. Learn more about the key role of retainers in preserving your perfect smile.

Fixed Retainers

The primary function of fixed lingual retainers is to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions after orthodontic treatment with braces or aligners. They can help maintain the results of the orthodontic treatment for years to come!

These retainers are placed after the active phase of orthodontic treatment is complete. They are custom-placed to fit the individual's teeth and are bonded in place with composite resin (similar to filling material). This makes them convenient for holding your smile in place 24/7.

Both fixed lingual retainers and removable vacuum-formed retainers can be used in conjunction for the purpose of maintaining the results of orthodontic treatment and preventing teeth from relapsing to their previous positions. At Glow Orthodontics we tailor your retention care to your specific needs, and Dr. Yeo will recommend retainers that are most suitable to keeping your smile straight!

It's crucial for individuals who receive either type of retainer to follow their orthodontist's instructions for wear and care to ensure the continued success of their orthodontic treatment. Regular follow-up appointments with the orthodontist are included as part of your treatment for monitoring the retention process.

To maintain their effectiveness, it's essential to keep fixed lingual retainers clean by regular brushing and flossing. Special floss threaders or interdental brushes can help in cleaning between the wires and teeth.

Most patients report getting used fixed retainers as part of their mouth and are comfortable to have them remain on their teeth for most of their life! Maintaining straight teeth has never been so easy.

Fixed retainers are discreet and not visible when smiling, which makes them a popular choice for long-term retention.

Fixed retainers, also known as bonded retainers, are thin wires that are permanently attached to the back (lingual) surface of the front teeth.

At Glow Orthodontics we use fixed retainers that are made of stainless steel which is safe for your mouth.

Removable Retainers

Removable vacuum-formed retainers, also known as clear retainers, are custom-made plastic trays that fit over the teeth. They are typically made from a clear, durable material, such as polyethylene or polypropylene.

The primary function of removable retainers is to hold the teeth in their corrected positions after orthodontic treatment. They help prevent teeth from shifting. Removable retainers are a great option for holding all front and back teeth.

These retainers are often provided after braces or clear aligner treatment is completed. They are worn full-time initially and then transition to night time wear as instructed by your orthodontist.

To maintain their cleanliness and prevent odors, removable retainers should be cleaned daily using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaning tablets. It's essential to avoid using hot water or harsh chemicals, as they can warp the plastic.

Removable retainers should be removed when eating, drinking (except for water), and performing oral hygiene routines.

Proper care and consistent wear are critical to the effectiveness of removable retainers. Failure to wear them as instructed can lead to teeth shifting over time.
