Considering orthodontic treatment can be a daunting process for anyone, but has additional considerations for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Hypersensitivity, coupled with the bright lights and loud sounds at the orthodontist can be overwhelming for a child with autism. The good news is that there are strategies available to make orthodontic treatment more comfortable, and to make the experience a positive one for the whole family.

Hypersensitivity

The main issue facing autistic children is the unusual sensations which come with wearing braces. When braces are attached to the teeth.

Daily maintenance

Braces require daily maintenance and proper cleaning. Some children with autism are sensitive to the feeling of brushing or flossing their teeth, and some don’t like the taste of toothpaste at all. But failing to keep braces clean can lead to other issues like gum disease or tooth decay - so it’s a necessary part of oral care.

Food restriction

Kids with ASD can struggle to understand that they can no longer eat certain foods. Consuming sugary foods and drinks - like sweets, gum, and sodas - is a big no no if you have traditional braces because they can get stuck in the wires and cause tooth decay.

Frequent orthodontist appointments

Having braces requires regular check-ups to make sure they are working as they should and to make any necessary adjustments. These appointments can be daunting for a child with autism due to the loud equipment, bright lights, uncomfortable sensations, and unfamiliar settings.

What Are the Challenges for Autistic Children Who Need Braces?

The process of getting braces can be overwhelming for children with autism due to:

If you think your child needs orthodontic treatment or if your regular dentist has recommended an orthodontic treatment, make an appointment with an orthodontist who can help you decide what the best strategy is. At Glow Orthodontics, we have extensive experience working with children with ASD, neurodivergence, or hypersensitivity concerns. We can work with parents to find the right solution given their unique set of circumstances.

Traditional metal braces

These can be tricky for children with autism due to the level of discomfort and food restrictions. But metal braces are the most effective way to treat complex orthodontic issues.

If you opt to go for metal braces, strategies can be put in place to make appointments less stressful and to help your child understand what is happening, and why. Ultimately, we want to ensure that braces and appointments do not cause any additional stress, discomfort, or fear.

Clear aligners (Invisalign)

Clear aligners are a good option for children with autism. They are more comfortable than metal braces and are removed to eat and brush teeth - which can solve the issue of food restriction and uncomfortable sensations when brushing teeth.

However, clear aligners require maintenance, regular wear, and good oral hygiene. For them to work properly it is advised that they are worn for at least 20 hours a day and only taken out to eat and brush teeth.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are attached to the back of the teeth which makes them invisible from the front and reduces the bulky feeling associated with traditional braces.

They may not be the best option for some autistic children because they are quite uncomfortable, difficult to clean, and require a change in diet (no sugary foods).
