Individuals who receive orthodontic braces often experience some level of discomfort within the first two weeks of treatment. Pain and discomfort vary depending on the person’s individual pain tolerance and biology.
However, in most cases, pain from braces will ease and certainly does not last for the entire length of treatment. Understand what you can expect from braces treatment, how long braces hurt for, and what you can do to relieve pain.
Are braces painful?
Orthodontic braces can cause some discomfort, and at times pain, which is often felt in the teeth, gums, and jaw – however, the pain is temporary and generally not severe. Pain experienced with braces is typically characterised by a dull soreness in the teeth and gums.
When getting braces, an orthodontist will bond brackets onto the surface of each tooth that requires movement, which connects and supports the arch wires that gently shift the teeth into alignment.
Initially, the wires and brackets may rub against the soft tissue in the mouth, causing minor irritation to the inside of the cheeks and lips. The mouth will become accustomed to the feeling of the braces and this initial sensation can become almost unnoticeable once the patient adapts.
Pain following your first appointment
The pressure from braces and wires on the teeth is the most active after the first appointment, as teeth start to move, and the response of the movements increases cell activity around the small ligaments (periodontal ligaments) holding the roots of the teeth in the gums. This can translate to discomfort and pain, which is typically experienced when pressure is placed on the teeth while eating and biting into foods. After the initial fitting of braces, this sensation can last for a day to a week.
Throughout the treatment, individuals will need to see their orthodontist for regular adjustments of the braces – about every six to eight weeks. Extra activations to your braces create light pressure to move the teeth, which can create a similar discomfort that can last from one to two days.

Within the first two weeks, discomfort from orthodontic braces is generally the most noticeable. The first three days after getting braces, the teeth will feel pressure or tightness and a dull ache. During these first few days, it’s recommended to eat soft foods as chewing and biting can cause the most discomfort.
After the first week with braces, the mouth will start to become accustomed, and although the teeth may still be sensitive, there should be significantly less discomfort.
Occasional discomfort may be felt throughout treatment, particularly after adjustments; however, it will be mild and typically last only a few hours to a couple of days. During adjustments, orthodontists will assess tooth movement, bite alignment, and oral hygiene and address any concerns, including pain associated with braces.
Traditional metal braces typically stay on for 18 to 24 months, depending on the individual's initial teeth and jaw position, as well as the complexity of the case. When braces are removed, there will be no discomfort or pain associated with orthodontics.

How to relieve pain from braces
Pain and discomfort from braces are generally experienced in the first week and after adjustments throughout treatment. The following can help relieve pain from braces:
Over-the-counter pain relief medication
Eating soft foods
Drinking and eating cold foods and beverages
Keeping up dental hygiene
If pain persists, if there is redness and swelling around the braces, or if you have difficulty speaking or eating, make an appointment with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist can identify the issue and make necessary adjustments.
